to create characters that males (specifically) made insecure in their masculinity by religion can identify with.

Contrarians recognize profitablity seems generally to come from investing opposite majority opinion and act accordingly. Non-conformists don't seek operating in opposing fashion in its own right but rather see things differently, and, as the crowd creates cycles by driving demand or supply to excess, the non-conformists simply respond in economic fashion.

Yes, demand ultimately leads to more supply, and over-supply, and vice versa, and again as to the lack of either, but overlaying that is human conformity (crowd following, "buying high/selling low" rather than "buying low/selling high").
